FITUR Exhibitor Tips: How to Stand Out at Madrid’s Tourism Fair

The most useful FITUR exhibitor tips fit in one sentence: plan early, design for both trade meetings and photographs, and speak your visitors’ languages. FITUR, the International Tourism Trade Fair held every January at IFEMA Madrid, is a global showcase where destinations, hotel groups, airlines, tour operators and technology companies meet. Being there is not enough; what makes the difference is how you present yourself. This article gathers what we have learned as stand builders. For dates, venue details and our turnkey service, see our FITUR stand design page.

FITUR in brief: dates, venue and audience

FITUR 2026 took place at IFEMA Madrid on 21–25 January 2026. The 2027 edition is scheduled for 20–24 January 2027. Confirm the dates and the trade and public days on the official FITUR website.

The fair’s strength is its global reach. In the same hall you can find Latin American destinations promoting ecotourism, European destinations focused on luxury and Asian countries showing tourism technology. Alongside the big national pavilions, FITUR also welcomes small and medium-sized companies, so the audience is broad: travel agencies, tour operators, hotel chains, airlines, marketing managers, journalists and government representatives.

The dates matter for planning. FITUR opens in the third week of January, which means design approvals and production fall in November and December, around the Christmas holidays in Spain. Building a FITUR stand cannot be improvised.

What FITUR stands look like

Large tourism stands tend to rely on bold architecture, strong brand colour and generous hospitality areas. The two examples below, photographed at past editions of FITUR, show the scale and visual impact that leading exhibitors aim for.

Both rely on a single strong gesture (a sculptural canopy, a clean white volume) that is recognisable from far down the aisle and photographs well for the press.

FITUR exhibitor tips: designing a stand that works

The best FITUR stand is not always the biggest or the most expensive. It is the one where design, message and hospitality work together.

Brand coherence

What matters most is the consistency between your brand message and the space. If you promote sustainable tourism, the stand should show it, with reusable structures, efficient lighting and natural elements that make the claim credible. Our guide to sustainable exhibition stands covers the options.

Interaction and experiences

The most visited stands offer experiences: touchscreens, virtual reality headsets to explore a destination, food tastings, live workshops or short presentations. These moments create emotions visitors remember long after the fair.

Location

A space in a high-traffic area, close to entrances or themed halls, can multiply your visibility. These positions cost more, but the return in contacts and business opportunities often justifies it.

People

A spectacular stand loses impact if the team is not ready to welcome visitors professionally, warmly and in several languages. Brief your staff on the offer, sales objectives, technology on the stand and how to log leads.

Meetings space

At FITUR, many deals happen in pre-arranged meetings. Plan seated meeting areas or semi-private rooms, plus a storage room for brochures and gifts, so the front of the stand stays open and inviting.

Traditional vs innovative stand at FITUR

Element Traditional stand Innovative stand
Design Basic decoration, little personalisation Creative, built around the brand identity
Interaction Brochures and a few screens Virtual reality, tastings, live activities
Materials Conventional, single use Reusable, recycled or low-impact, integrated technology
Visitor experience Passive Active and immersive
Contact generation Depends on passing traffic Designed to start conversations and book meetings

Common mistakes to avoid at FITUR

FITUR is a significant investment, and these errors reduce the return the most:

  • Underestimating preparation time. Waiting to define the design or hire suppliers leads to improvised, less effective solutions. A stand that looks good but has no meeting areas or poor visibility loses effectiveness.
  • Not arranging meetings in advance. Opportunities at FITUR do not depend only on spontaneous traffic. Book meetings with key partners before the fair, using the organiser’s tools where available.
  • No communication plan. Support your presence with social media, newsletters, press releases and follow-up actions. Without it, contacts are easily lost.
  • Communicating in only one language. FITUR is an international showcase. Materials only in Spanish limit your reach; English is essential, and other languages should match the markets you want to attract.

Practical checklist for FITUR exhibitors

  • Design a stand that is consistent with your brand identity.
  • Include interactive experiences that engage visitors.
  • Prepare multilingual materials for international visitors.
  • Train your team in customer care, languages and the technology on the stand.
  • Arrange meetings in advance.
  • Support your presence with digital campaigns before, during and after the fair.
  • Brief your stand builder ideally 3–4 months before the show, which for FITUR means September or October.

Exhibiting at FITUR with a stand builder from Barcelona

We manage FITUR projects end to end: 3D design, materials, lighting, graphics and AV, production in our Barcelona workshop, transport to Madrid, and build-up and dismantling at IFEMA by our own crew. International exhibitors get one English-speaking project manager and an itemised quote. As a guide, a basic modular stand starts at €3,000–6,000, a mid-size custom stand is typically €20,000–30,000, and premium stands for major international fairs can exceed €100,000; floor space is paid separately to IFEMA. The image above shows one of our own stands, built for Iquall Networks at MWC Barcelona 2025 (see the case study): an open corner layout with timber slats, greenery and a suspended logo ring. It is a formula that also works well for tourism brands that want a welcoming, natural feel.

National pavilion, regional stand or company stand?

FITUR hosts very different kinds of exhibitor, and the right stand depends on which one you are:

  • Country and regional pavilions. Large spaces shared by a tourism board and its co-exhibitors (hotels, incoming agencies, airlines). The design must give the destination a strong identity while providing counters or meeting tables for each co-exhibitor. Storage, a hospitality area and a stage for presentations are usually essential.
  • Hotel groups, airlines and cruise or ferry companies. Brand-led stands where the experience of the product (a room, a cabin, a lounge) can be suggested through materials, lighting and furniture. Meeting rooms are often the most used part of the stand.
  • Travel technology and service companies. Smaller, demo-led stands where screens and a good counter matter more than a lounge.
  • Smaller destinations and SMEs. Modular or hybrid stands that can be reused across several fairs in the year are often the most cost-effective option.

Whatever the format, decide early how many meetings you expect per day and how many people will staff the stand. Those two numbers drive the layout more than anything else.

Planning timeline for a FITUR stand

Because FITUR opens in January, the calendar is tighter than it looks. Counting back from the show:

When What to do
As early as possible Book space with IFEMA; good positions in each hall go early.
September–October Brief your stand builder: objectives, co-exhibitors, meetings per day, AV, catering, storage.
October–November Design approval, technical drawings submitted to the venue, venue services ordered.
November–December Production, graphics and AV. Remember that suppliers slow down over the Christmas holidays in Spain.
January Transport to Madrid, build-up at IFEMA in the days before opening, staff briefing on the stand.
After the show Dismantling, storage of reusable parts and follow-up of every lead.

Our exhibition stand planning checklist covers each step in more detail. If you are coming from abroad, factor in team travel and hotels for build-up as well as show days: Madrid hotels fill up quickly during FITUR week.

Designing a FITUR stand that works for the press

FITUR is one of the most photographed and filmed trade fairs in Spain. Ministers, regional presidents and celebrities tour the halls, and national and specialist media cover the opening days. A stand that photographs well gets more coverage, and that can be designed:

  • A clear backdrop for photos. Plan one wall or feature where your logo and destination image appear behind people being interviewed or photographed.
  • A small stage or presentation area, with good lighting and a screen, for press conferences, agreement signings and destination presentations.
  • Brand visible from above and from afar. Suspended signage or a tall element helps both visitors and camera operators find you.
  • Good light on faces. Hall lighting is flat; integrated lighting on the stage and counters makes every photo and video better.
  • A route for VIP visits. If you expect official visits, design the layout so a group can walk in, see the highlights and be photographed without blocking the stand.

Build-up at IFEMA: what to expect

Build-up for space-only stands at IFEMA follows the venue’s exhibitor manual: stand plans must be submitted for approval, contractors need accreditation, and installation happens within fixed days and hours before opening. Rules on heights, double-deck structures, rigging and fire-rated materials vary by hall and by show, so always check the current manual rather than relying on what applied last year. A stand builder used to working at IFEMA will handle these steps for you, order the right services and make sure the stand passes inspection. If you are comparing builders, a trade show booth contractor that also produces in its own workshop gives you more control over finishes and timings.

Benefits of exhibiting at FITUR

  • Visibility and positioning in front of the main decision-makers in tourism, and first-hand insight into trends such as digitalisation and sustainability.
  • Partnerships: many international agreements start with a single meeting on a stand.
  • Launches: FITUR works as a live test for new products and services.
  • Reputation: a strong presence signals that your company is ready to compete internationally.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next FITUR?

FITUR 2026 was held at IFEMA Madrid on 21–25 January 2026. The 2027 edition is scheduled for 20–24 January 2027. Check the official FITUR website for confirmed dates.

How much does a stand at FITUR cost?

It depends on size, location and design. As a guide, a basic modular stand starts at €3,000–6,000, a mid-size custom stand is typically €20,000–30,000 and premium stands can exceed €100,000. Floor space is paid separately to IFEMA.

How far in advance should I book for FITUR?

Reserve space as early as possible to secure a good location, and brief your stand builder ideally 3–4 months before the show, which for FITUR means September or October.

What kind of companies exhibit at FITUR?

National and regional tourism boards, hotel chains, airlines, cruise and ferry companies, travel agencies, tour operators, travel technology start-ups and small local destinations.

Which languages should I use on my FITUR stand?

English is essential. Add Spanish and the languages of the markets you most want to attract, both on graphics and in printed or digital materials.

Can a FITUR stand be reused at other tourism fairs?

Yes. A modular or hybrid stand with a reusable structure and changeable graphics can be stored after FITUR and adapted for other fairs in Spain or Europe, which lowers the cost per show.

How can I get the most out of FITUR?

Arrange meetings before the event, design a stand with space for them, train your team and run a communication plan before, during and after the fair.
